There are lots of really good “magic girl” stories out there–I don’t mean the specific genre of “magical girl” with all its increasingly ossified tropes, but the wider concept–though if I were to pick one that most inspired WPK, it would probably be Mai the Psychic Girl. I read the first few issues in my brief few years when I actually read comics as a kid, and Mai kicked a hole in my head that never really healed right. Everyone else remembers Akira, and I freaking love Akira, but I remember Mai more. I only finished the story while creating WPK and it significantly shaped my art, from the way Anthem looks and moves to the way–here at the end–Maresh flies not like our jet-powered protagonist but by just sort of drifting through the air.
Judo Cultivation? Using his own power against him?
Like I said. Anthem outranks Maresh, in terms of who Tamantha would like more. And I feel like Maresh was basically abusing the everloving crap out of the whole ‘I’m the last follower of Cultivation, of Yamra’ for his gaining power.
And now we’re about to see the problem of that…
