I think I’m finally starting to figure out some of the basics of color.
Have I mentioned Al Williamson before? He was an astounding artist and his work on Flash Gordon offers some of the most important western long-format art apart from Hal Foster’s Prince Valiant.
Well, to be honest, your learning process on all matters is astonishing, but you had quite a ton of talent to start with. Yet I am very glad you still stick to that slightly naive (in a strictly technical sense, in no way meant negatively) and placative style you started with. To make decisions consciously instead of following intuition doesn’t mean you have to abandon your unique style. And man, I love your style!
It has been a long yourney, and I am glad we will see it’s end. There are too many great grafic novels on eternal hiatus out there. It will be sad to finally reach the last page and close this book, on the other hand, the bigger the climax, the deeper the depression on the other side.
Jules Verne dubbed his stories “fantastic yourneys”. This has been one so far, and still is. Despite all sadness concerning the near end, I can’t wait to finally reach the conclusion… And that means your storytelling is on par with your art: I love it!
Two things I really adore about this page: (a) the composition of that first panel, and (b) the colors of the fifth panel in contrast to the rest of the page.
Thanks, everyone!
It really is a gorgeous page – you’ve come a LONG way from Broken Space.
