I suspect next panel we shall find it isn’t sentimentality. It’s practicality. Dosh is a figurehead. He can be replaced. The beloved Emperor struck down, replaced by some faithful lieutenant. Possibly by Maresh himself. Killing the alchemist disables their arsenal. Weakens them everywhere they fight.
I’m not exactly sure what we’re seeing in the second panel, but it was obviously effective.
