Not satisfied with the backgrounds here, since they don’t clearly convey where everything is. Kawunei and co. are supposed to be at ground level beside the fort, which has curled up and lowered itself to the ground. Meanwhile, Dosh and Lt Poggle are supposed to be fighting a much more pitched battle than what’s shown here, but the way I laid them out, I couldn’t get more background characters in; they’re actually alongside a dozen or so mercenaries fighting off scores of ghouls. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to convey any of that.
I was very surprised when the whim that led me to Water Phoenix King was rewarded quickly. On the page Maresh was ressurected by Barrabon I saw a ancient and complex cosmology, followed up by an intuitive and novel protagnists, levened with archetypical favourites and lots of realistic fantasy politics. its taken its place among my small list of webcomics better than most books.
It reads a lot like Malazan books, and I give a better compliment than that sir. Well done.
Thank you! I’m glad you’re enjoying the comic. While the Malazan books were not an inspiration for WPK (I started reading them after I started the comic), I’ve enjoyed the series immensely.
You know, it begins to occur to me that this is not the second time that Gilgam has threatened to shoot Kawunei…
“Sir, your XO just said he was gonna frag you!”
::sigh:: “Yeah, I know.”
“And you’re okay with it?!”
“He does that. And he’s not really my XO because we don’t really have a chain of command in this party, more like ‘Project Coordinator’ or something.”
“How is that better?”
“It’s not insubordination so I don’t have to do anything about it.”
“Yeah, whatEVER, man — you still give the orders and you’re still responsible, which is why you’re toast and I have dibs when you screw up.”
“Like that?”
“Uh-huh.”
(Also, Rosie is such an unhappy little critter in that scene — you can just hear her thinking “What have my people gotten me into this time? First giant robots, now killer hail! It’s a nice day, why can’t we just go hunt for rabbits instead?”)
